"During the current gas year, which starts at the beginning of October, Bulgaria will be able to rely on supplies from secure sources of liquefied natural gas from Alexandroupolis Terminal." This was stated by Bulgartransgaz EAD Executive Director, Vladimir Malinov during a working visit of the gas transmission operator management. "The resumed commercial operations of the facility will guarantee both, the security of supplies to the countries in the region and diversification through access to various reliable sources such as the USA and others," Malinov added.
After the operation of the regasification unit was suspended at the end of January 2025, the technical malfunction in the operation of the booster pumps was removed. As of August 15, 2025, the Terminal will operate at 25% of its capacity, and as of October 1, it will operate at 75% of its capacity (about 125,000 MWh/day). The first tanker is expected to be regasified by the end of October. In the next months, the rehabilitation plan is expected to be completed and the Terminal will reach its maximum capacity of about 166,000 MWh/day.
“The Terminal in Alexandroupolis, in which Bulgartransgaz is a shareholder, is among the essential elements necessary to guarantee diversified supplies of liquefied natural gas in the South-Eastern European region from secure sources. The facility is also key to meeting European energy security priorities,” emphasized Vladimir Malinov during the visit to the storage and regasification platform. He recalled that the implementation of the infrastructure along the Vertical Gas Corridor on Bulgarian territory continues, which will enable transmission of reliable and uninterrupted supplies of liquefied gas to the region.
